larger
- 1Comparative of large.
The eastern wing is larger than the rest of the building combined.
Their second store occupies a larger space downtown.
Note
A comparative built the old way, by suffix: Middle English largere, large plus -er, with the silent e of large simply absorbing the ending. With than it states the comparison outright (larger than the rest of the building). Without than it can simply mean fairly big, as in a larger space downtown. In ordinary prose, reach for larger rather than more large. The suffix is the standard pattern for one-syllable adjectives.
