leaped
- 1Simple past and past participle of leap.
The deer leaped across the trail and vanished into the trees.
Stock prices leaped after the surprise announcement.
Note
One spelling does double duty here. In "the deer leaped" it is the simple past, and with have ("the deer had leaped") it is the participle. It carries every verb sense of leap, including the transitive ones: a horse leaped a ditch, or a rider leaped a horse over it. In archaic use it also covers the sense of mating with a female animal or a person. Only the noun leap has no share in it.
The horse leaped the ditch without breaking stride.
She had leaped the gap before anyone could stop her.
