learnings
- 1Plural of learning. Chiefly business jargon for lessons learned; often criticized as nonstandard.
The report summarized the key learnings from the failed product launch.
After the workshop, participants exchanged their learnings over coffee.
Note
A plural that sounds like recent office jargon but is far older: Caxton printed lernynges in 1483, and in Shakespeare's Cymbeline (1611) the King puts to the boy "all the learnings that his time could make him the receiver of." What draws objection today is the countable use for a single thing learned, as in the New York Times line of 2007, "We'll take the learnings and apply them." Careful readers notice it, while uncountable learning never offends.
