leathered
- 1Simple past and past participle of leather.
The striker leathered the ball into the top corner.
By the final whistle, they had leathered the visiting side six to nil.
Note
One spelling serves every meaning of the verb, from covering something with leather to striking a ball hard or beating someone with a strap. Most uses take a direct object, and the same form works alone or after have and be: she leathered it, it had been leathered, it was leathered. In got leathered, only context tells a beating apart from the drunken adjective.
- 2Extremely drunk; intoxicated by alcohol.
After six pints he was thoroughly leathered.
Half the wedding guests were leathered before the speeches even began.
Similardrunk, hammered, plastered, wasted, smashed

Note
Pub slang for drink taken to excess. It most often follows get, as in we got leathered or naturally got leathered, and intensifiers like totally and thoroughly sit easily in front of it. Andrew O'Hagan's The Illuminations (2015) stretches it with on, as in leathered on national pride, meaning drunk on something other than beer. Keep it to casual talk. In formal writing, intoxicated is the safe choice.
