leaving
LEE-ving/ˈliːvɪŋ/
- 1Present participle and gerund of leave.
The guests were leaving just as the rain started.
Leaving the company after twenty years was a hard decision.
Note
The -ing form of leave does two grammatical jobs. With a form of be it builds the progressive (they were leaving). Without be it can trail a noun, as in The Economist's "mariners leaving the port" (2013). As a gerund it heads a noun phrase yet keeps the verb's object: leaving the company. It also carries every sense of leave, so leaving the door open means letting it stay open, not departing.
