lingered
- 1Simple past and past participle of linger.
Guests lingered over coffee long after dinner had ended.
By midnight only a few stragglers had lingered in the hall.
Note
One regular -ed spelling does double duty: the simple past (she lingered at the door) and the participle after have (the smell had lingered for days). Every meaning of linger is intransitive: staying on, fading slowly toward death, dwelling on a question. So the participle pairs with have rather than be, and it almost never builds a passive. Nothing is "lingered" by anyone; people and things simply linger.
