linked
- 1Joined or connected to something else, whether physically, by a shared cause, or through references between parts such as data records or files.
Like rings in a chain, where pulling on one drags the rest along.
The committee concluded that the two scandals were closely linked.
A series of linked tunnels ran beneath the old fortress.
UsageUsually linked to or linked with something, often closely linked.
- 2Simple past and past participle of link, used as a verb for the act of connecting or joining things (she linked the two files), not to describe the state of being connected.
Investigators linked the two crimes to the same suspect.
Last spring the city linked the two parks with a new bike path.
UsageThe passive be linked to is the usual way to report a connection: an illness linked to smoking.
Note
One spelling does two jobs because link is regular. It is the simple past (investigators linked the crimes) and also the participle in perfect and passive forms (the crimes have been linked). A page that linked to another simply contained a hyperlink to it. Once the participle settles into a description, it becomes the adjective.
