literatures
- 1Plural of literature.
Scholars often trace shared themes across the literatures of neighboring nations.
The course surveys the literatures of three medieval languages.
Note
A plural that exists only because literature is usually uncountable. Counting it changes the picture: each nation, people or culture is given its own body of writing, set beside the others. It also suits research, where the literatures of two fields are separate bodies of published papers. The sense of fine fiction rarely pluralizes, and the obsolete sense of literacy would not take a plural at all.
