logics
- 1Plural of logic.
Philosophers debated which logics best capture everyday human reasoning.
Modal and temporal logics extend the rules of classical deduction in different ways.
Note
A plural that only some meanings of logic allow. Logic as a way of thinking, or as the circuitry inside a machine, is uncountable and has no plural. What pluralizes is logic as a system: a formal language with its own deductive rules, as in modal and temporal logics, or a personal scheme of thought, as when two thinkers' rival logics clash. The study of inference can be counted or not.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of logic.
Note
A present-tense verb whose tone shifts with its object. Used without one, it is usually a put-down: someone who logics is overthinking, applying reasoning where it does not belong. With an object it turns neutral, meaning to reason something through, or pointed, meaning to beat someone in argument. The spelling also matches the noun plural, so the sentence's grammar decides which is meant.
