lotting
USLAH-ting/ˈlɑtɪŋ/SayLOT-ingUK/ˈlɒtɪŋ/AUS/ˈlɔtɪŋ/
- 1Present participle and gerund of lot.
The estate manager is lotting the furniture for the upcoming auction.
Lotting the entire collection took the catalogers three full days.
Note
The -ing form does double work: a progressive verb (is lotting the furniture) and a verbal noun (lotting the collection took days). Both verb senses behind it are dated. The transitive one, to sort or apportion, takes a direct object and survives where goods are divided into lots for sale. The other, American and informal, means reckoning and needs on or upon: lotting on a fair price.
