lyrics
- 1The words that make up a song or another piece of vocal music.
The songwriter spent weeks polishing the lyrics before recording.
Many fans praised the album's clever, heartfelt lyrics.
Note
One song has lyrics, not a lyric: the words of a song are thought of as a set, and the verb agrees in the plural, as in "the lyrics were full of nostalgia." Its natural partners are song lyrics, write lyrics and learn the lyrics. A singular lyric for this meaning does exist, but it is unusual, and the plural is the safe default.
- 2Plural of lyric.
The anthology opens with a handful of medieval lyrics.
Critics rank his lyrics among the finest of the period.
Note
Here each lyric is a whole poem, so the plural counts poems: a handful of medieval lyrics, two lyrics by the same poet. Only the noun takes the -s. Lyric is also an adjective, as in lyric poetry or a lyric soprano, and as an adjective it never changes form. Keep this countable plural apart from the words of a song, where lyrics names the text of a single song.
