majored
USMAY-jurd/ˈmeɪ̯d͡ʒɚ(ɹ)d/SayMAY-juhdUK/ˈmeɪ̯d͡ʒə(ɹ)d/AUS/ˈmæɪ̯d͡ʒə(ɹ)d/
- 1Simple past tense and past participle of major.
He majored in history and later worked at a museum.
Many graduates who majored in engineering found jobs quickly.
Note
A form that never travels without its preposition: the verb behind it lives only in the phrasal verb major in, so one majored in history, never simply majored history. Being intransitive, it builds its perfect with have (she had majored in engineering). The adjective major, used before nouns for what is greater or more serious, has no part in this form; the -ed ending belongs to the study verb alone.
