malled
- 1Simple past and past participle of mall.
Note
One spelling serves three quite different verbs. Malling with a mall, or mallet, means beating or bruising with something heavy, which is the sense the stakes and siege gates show. The other two come from the shopping mall. Land can be malled, built up with shopping centers. In informal speech, someone who malled all afternoon simply went shopping. That shopping sense takes no object, so it never appears in the passive.
Within a decade the old farmland had been malled from one end of the valley to the other.
We malled all Saturday and came home with nothing but pretzels.
