mapped
- 1Simple past and past participle of map.
Surveyors mapped the entire coastline over three summers.
The valley had been mapped decades before the railroad arrived.
Note
One spelling does double duty, with the final p doubled before -ed: they mapped the coast, and the coast has been mapped. Because map is mostly transitive, passives come easily. The intransitive "correspond" meaning takes to instead, as in each code mapped to a single letter. Computing adds its own use: a shared folder mapped to a drive letter.
- 2Recorded or represented on a map; in graphic design, having an image projected onto its surface.
The newly mapped seafloor revealed several uncharted ridges.
The designer rendered a fully mapped sphere with the company logo wrapped around it.
Similarcharted
Note
In graphic design the word moves from geography to surfaces. The map is an image laid over an object, so a mapped sphere wears its picture rather than being charted. Outside that field it keeps the surveyor's sense, and it is gradable: one region can be more mapped than another, and a well-studied coast may be among the most mapped anywhere.
