matched
- 1Simple past and past participle of match.
His alibi matched the security footage in every detail.
The team has matched last year's sales record.
Note
One spelling serves two jobs, as with every regular -ed verb: the simple past (the colors matched) and the participle after have or be (has matched, was matched). The participle carries every meaning of the verb, including the craftsman's sense of fitting edges with tongue and groove, and the now obsolete one of pairing two people in marriage.
- 2Ellipsis of matched grip.
She switched from traditional to matched after years behind the snare.
For loud marching cadences he prefers matched over traditional.
Note
A drummer's clipped noun, used when the talk is already about grip and the second word can drop away. Its usual foil is traditional, which is shortened the same way. It takes no article: you play matched, or switch to matched. It belongs to conversation among players. In writing for readers who do not drum, spell out matched grip.
