mattered
USMAT-urd/ˈmæt.ɚd/UKMAT-uhd/ˈmæt.əd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of matter.
Her opinion mattered more than anyone else's in the room.
By the end, it hardly mattered whether they arrived on time.
Note
One spelling serves both the past (it mattered) and the perfect (it had mattered). Because the everyday verb is intransitive and stative, it has no passive and rarely a progressive: things mattered, but they were never "mattered." Regional English in England and the Caribbean also has a transitive "mind, care about" use. In older writing, a sore that mattered was forming pus, not proving important.
