memos
- 1Plural of memo.
Stacks of unread memos piled up on the desk after the holiday.
The board reviewed several internal memos about the budget shortfall.
Note
One plural serves both kinds of memo: the office note and the programmer's stored record of partial results, which is kept so it can be reused without recomputing. Memo is short for memorandum, so the Latinate memoranda remains available in formal writing, but memos is the everyday form. The same spelling also serves as the verb form, and only position tells them apart: the memos piled up, she memos the team.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of memo.
The director memos his staff every Monday with updated priorities.
Whenever a deadline shifts, she memos the project leads immediately.
Note
Here memo works as an informal office verb, and it takes two patterns. With a person as the object, it means sending a note for the record: she memos the project leads. With a thing as the object, it means writing that thing down. It takes the regular -s ending. Because the verb is informal, sends a memo to is the safer phrasing in formal prose.
