milled
- 1Simple past and past participle of mill.
The old watermill milled grain for the entire village.
The flour had been milled only hours before baking.
Note
One regular spelling carries all of mill's verb meanings: grain milled into flour, metal milled to shape, a coin milled with grooves around its edge. The aimless sense works differently. Crowds milled about the square takes no object, so it has no passive form. With the transitive senses, was milled can be a true passive or the "ground" adjective describing a finished state.
- 2Reduced to flour, meal, or powder by grinding in a mill.
The recipe calls for finely milled almonds rather than whole nuts.
Freshly milled flour has a sweeter aroma than the store-bought kind.
Oppositewhole
Note
This adjective has no degrees: one flour is not "more milled" than another. Adverbs of fineness do the grading instead. The difference they mark can change what a product is called: coarsely milled maize is cornmeal, while finely milled and sifted maize is corn flour. In a recipe, the adverb in front tells the cook what texture to expect.
