models
- 1Plural of model.
The museum displayed wooden models of early sailing ships.
Two professional models walked the runway for the designer.
Note
One spelling does two jobs here: the same letters serve as the present-tense verb, so the designer's models and the designer models are told apart only by grammar. As a plural it counts people and things alike: runway professionals, artists' sitters, replicas of ships, simulations of a system, and the styles a maker sells, as in this year's models.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of model.
The simulation models the spread of disease across a population.
He models part-time for a local art studio.
Note
This form keeps both halves of the verb's grammar. With an object, it means building a representation (the program models rainfall), shaping something from a material like clay, or wearing something for show (she models the jacket). Without an object, it means doing the work itself, often followed by for: he models for a painter.
