months
- 1Plural of month.
It took several months to finish the renovation.
The construction project stretched across eighteen months.
Note
A regular plural that mostly just counts: several months, eighteen months, always with a plural verb. Before a noun, English drops the -s and adds a hyphen, so it is a six-month lease, not a six-months lease. The plural once also carried the old word for a period, a meaning the singular month never had on its own.
- 2A person's monthly menstrual discharge; the regular menstrual period.
The midwife asked whether the young woman's months had come on time.
She kept to her chamber whenever her months were upon her.
Note
Here the calendar became the body: the cycle that came round each month was simply called the months. It exists only in the plural and takes a plural verb, as in her months were late. Because it is obsolete, it belongs in historical fiction or in reading older texts. In modern writing period is the plain word, and readers who meet the months today may need it explained.
