Origin
An earlier spelling was Marocco, taken from Portuguese Marrocos and/or Spanish Marruecos, which come from Arabic murrākuš, itself from a Berber phrase meaning literally "Land of God." The word first referred to the capital city of Marrakech, founded in the late 11th century, but later came to stand for the whole westernmost region of the Islamic world.
