Note
The word reached English by a long road: Arabic masjid, literally "place of prostration," passed through Italian moschea and Middle French mosquée before arriving here. Masjid has since been borrowed directly as well, so English now holds both ends of the same word as a doublet. The two mean the same building. Mosque is the general English term, while masjid keeps the Arabic form and its image of the body bowed in prayer.
