motored
- 1Simple past and past participle of motor.
The family motored across the state in a single day.
After the repairs, she motored home through the heavy rain.
Note
One regular -ed form does both jobs: they motored home, and they had motored home. It covers several senses of the verb: the dated sense of touring by car, the informal one of moving briskly, slang for leaving, and an aviation use in which an engine is turned on its starter without fuel. That last use is transitive, so it also appears in the passive: the engine was motored.
- 2Equipped with a motor or motors.
Early motored bicycles were noisy but surprisingly fast.
The factory shipped both motored and hand-cranked models side by side.
Note
Mostly found at the tail of a compound, where a number or description comes first, as in a twin-motored biplane. The hyphen ties the two parts together before the noun. Because a thing either has a motor or does not, the word takes no degrees: nothing is "more motored" than something else. Used on its own, it simply sets powered models apart from hand-driven ones.
