Origin

Around 1615, English borrowed muslim, "one who submits," from Arabic مُسْلِم. Grammatically it is the active participle of the verb أَسْلَمَ (ʔaslama), "he submitted," which is formed on the three-consonant root س ل م (s l m), meaning "to be whole, intact." From the same root comes the verbal noun إسْلام (ʔislām), literally "submission." In religious use, muslim means "one who has religious faith or piety."
