networks
- 1Plural of network.
Several regional power networks share electricity during peak demand.
Researchers compared the road networks of three neighboring cities.
Note
One spelling covers every kind of network at once: computer systems, broadcast chains, circles of contacts, and the woven mesh of fibers. The Internet is often called a network of networks, and there the plural does real work, because each member is itself a whole system. The same letters also spell the present-tense verb, as in she networks. A determiner or a plural verb (the networks are) marks the noun.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of network.
Our sales lead networks tirelessly to build new partnerships.
The recruiter networks across several industries to source candidates.
Note
Two constructions share this form, and the object decides between them. In the social sense nothing follows the verb: she networks at conferences, or networks with former colleagues. In the technical senses an object is required, whether the thing linked is computers or a program sent out to affiliates. If an object follows, the meaning is connecting things. If none does, it is cultivating people.
The technician networks the office printers so everyone can use them.
The station networks its evening news across all its affiliates.
