1 meaning of nevertheless

  1. 1
    adverb
Introduces a statement that holds true despite what was just said or might be expected from it; even so.

    Similarnonetheless, however, still, yet, regardless

    Note

Three small words are fused here: never ("not at all") + the + less, so it literally means "not at all the less", the same pattern as never the wiser. As a connective adverb it can move where a conjunction cannot: to the front of a sentence, after a semicolon or colon, or inside the clause, as in Jacob Sullum's "He nevertheless could and should have made it clearer." At the front, a comma usually follows it.

Origin

From Middle English nevertheles (also never-the-les, nevere-the-lesse). By surface analysis it breaks down into never ("not at all") + the + less, much like the phrase never the wiser.
