newspapers
- 1Plural of newspaper.
Several national newspapers printed the same correction within a week.
He spread a few newspapers across the table before carving the pumpkin.
Note
The -s plural covers three things at once: printed copies, the organizations behind them, and sheets of the paper itself. For the material, the plural is optional. You can wrap glass in newspaper with no -s at all, because that sense is also uncountable. The same spelling serves as the verb's present-tense form, so sentence position decides which one you are reading.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of newspaper.
He newspapers the floor of the garage before any messy repair.
Whenever the cage needs cleaning, she newspapers the bottom tray first.
Note
The household verb needs a direct object: someone newspapers a floor, a tray or a shelf before a messy job. The journalism sense can also stand alone (she newspapers for a living), though it sounds unusual to most ears. A third use, harassing someone through printed articles, is obsolete. A reader may meet it in older texts, but it should not be revived.
