novels
USNAH-vuhlz/ˈnɑvl̩z/UKNOV-uhlz/ˈnɒvl̩z/
- 1Plural of novel.
The author published two novels before turning thirty.
Critics often compare her later novels to the work of earlier masters.
Note
A regular plural, made with a plain -s, and always a noun: the adjective novel ("new, original") never takes an ending, so novels cannot mean "new things" in that sense. The plural carries all of the noun's meanings. Besides books, there are two historical ones: short tales gathered into a larger work, and new legal constitutions of ancient Rome. The old sense "novelties" is obsolete.
