nursed
SayNURST/nɝst/UK/nɜːst/
- 1Past tense and past participle of nurse.
He nursed a quiet grudge against his former boss for years.
The injured climber was nursed back to health at a remote clinic.
Note
One regular -ed spelling does both jobs, so only the clause tells them apart: she nursed the patient (simple past) against she had nursed, or was nursed, back to health (participle). Most uses of nurse take an object and form a passive freely, but the objectless feeding use (the baby nursed quietly) has no passive. Informally, someone who nursed a drink sipped it slowly to make it last.
