objects
- 1Plural of object.
Investigators photographed every one of the objects found at the scene.
Several heavy objects had shifted during the long flight.
Note
The plural covers every noun sense of object. It can mean the things found at a scene, the goals a plan sets out, the grammatical objects of verbs and prepositions, the people or things an emotion is aimed at, or the instances of a class or structure. The same spelling also belongs to a separate word with its own history. A determiner or plural agreement (the objects are) marks the noun, while a singular subject marks the verb meaning 'oppose'.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of object.
The senator objects to the amendment on procedural grounds.
Whenever the budget comes up, the treasurer objects loudly.
Note
This is the form the verb takes after a singular subject in the present: he, she or it objects. In current use the verb is intransitive and takes to before whatever is opposed, as in objects to the amendment or objects to the delay. Older transitive uses, now obsolete, made the charge itself the object, so that a fault or accusation was objected against someone as a reproach.
