offers
- 1Third-person singular simple present of offer.
The company offers a full refund on damaged goods.
Each plan offers a different level of coverage.
Note
Two patterns follow this verb, and they mean different things. With a to-infinitive it expresses willingness: she offers to drive. With a direct object it puts something forward to be accepted or turned down: the shop offers discounts. That second pattern stretches from goods for sale to a sacrifice presented to God or gods, and whatever is offered can always be refused.
She offers to drive whenever it rains.
The temple priest offers grain to the gods each morning.
- 2Plural of offer.
All the job offers arrived within the same month.
The seller rejected both offers as too low.
Note
The plural covers every kind of offer, from job offers to bids on a house. In contract law each one is a precise thing: terms definite enough that acceptance alone creates a binding agreement. The same spelling is also the plural of an agent noun of off, meaning people who off something, and it is the present-tense verb, as in she offers.
