outfitting
- 1Present participle and gerund of outfit.
The company is outfitting its delivery fleet with electric engines.
Volunteers spent the morning outfitting the shelter with beds and blankets.
Note
Here the -ing form carries the verb's transitive pattern: someone outfits something, and what is supplied usually follows with, as in outfitting a fleet with electric engines or a shelter with beds. The final t doubles before the ending, as in fitting. As a gerund it can head a phrase (outfitting the shelter took all morning) and still take an object, which separates it from the noun for the gear itself.
- 2A furnishing or accouterment provided for a particular purpose or activity.
The expedition's outfitting was both costly and meticulously chosen.
Sailors inspected every piece of outfitting before leaving port.
Note
The noun is mostly heard in the plural: outfittings are the separate pieces of furnishing and gear that equip a ship, an expedition or a room, counted item by item. The singular exists, but the plural is the safer choice when you mean the items themselves. Unlike the verb's -ing form, this noun takes no object. You speak of the outfittings of a ship, not of outfitting a ship.
