owed
SayOHD/oʊd/UK/əʊd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of owe.
The company owed millions to its suppliers by the end of the year.
He realized he had owed his old friend an apology for years.
Note
One spelling does both jobs, as with any regular verb. Alone it is the past (she owed rent). With have it forms the perfect (she had owed it for years). It keeps every construction of owe: two objects (owed him an apology), no object (they still owed), or a cause introduced by to (owed her recovery to the nurses). In that last use the debt is gratitude, not money.
