patenting
- 1Present participle and gerund of patent.
The firm is patenting several gene-editing techniques this year.
Patenting the process gave the inventor exclusive rights for two decades.
Note
One spelling does two jobs. In "the firm is patenting a technique" it is a progressive verb, and in "patenting the process paid off" it is a noun naming the act itself. Either way it keeps the verb's transitive habit and wants an object: you are always patenting something. The same form also carries the figurative sense of monopolizing what you are identified with, and the historical US use for securing title to land.
