paused
SayPAWZD/pɔzd/UK/pɔːzd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of pause.
The speaker paused for a moment to let the point sink in.
She paused the recording so she could jot down a few notes.
Note
One spelling does two jobs: the simple past (she paused) and the participle after have (she had paused). The participle also forms passives, but only from the transitive uses, stopping an activity or halting playback. So the film was paused is natural, while the speaker was paused is not, because a speaker who stops talking pauses without pausing anything.
