photos
- 1Plural of photo.
The reporter sorted through hundreds of photos from the protest.
Several blurry photos were all that survived from the trip.
Note
One plural serves every noun use of photo. Photos can be photographs, digital pictures of any kind, or the photo finishes that settle a close race. Each of these is informal, so in formal writing photographs is the safer choice. Photography in the sense of the craft does not take a plural. The same spelling also serves as the verb meaning 'takes a photograph of'.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of photo.
The tourist photos the cathedral from every possible angle.
Whenever a rare bird appears, she photos it before reaching for her notebook.
Note
A verb form that nearly always comes with an object, as in she photos the cathedral or he photos every rare bird, because photo as a verb is transitive. To describe the activity without naming what is pictured, English reaches for photographs or takes photos instead. Its spelling matches the plural noun, and a following object usually shows which one is meant.
