planets
- 1Plural of planet.
Astronomers have discovered thousands of planets orbiting distant stars.
The rocky planets differ sharply from the gas giants in size and composition.
Note
A regular plural whose count has shifted over time. Older usage numbered seven planets, with the Sun and Moon among them, and once took in the asteroids as minor planets; in IAU usage the Solar System's planets are eight, Mercury to Neptune. One use has no plural at all: "the planet" or "this planet" meaning Earth stays singular, so the plural always counts Earth as one world among others.
planets is a form of planet
