played
- 1Simple past and past participle of play.
The orchestra played a slow movement before the intermission.
She has played the violin since she was six years old.
Note
Because play is both transitive and intransitive, its participle behaves differently in each case. With have it builds the perfect either way: the children have played outside, she has played the violin. With be it forms a passive only when there was an object to promote, as in the match was played in the rain. The intransitive, recreational use therefore has no passive, and nobody says the children were played.
The final was played under floodlights in front of a full stadium.
The children have played in the garden all afternoon.
