Origin

It comes through Middle English poete and Old French poete from Latin poēta ('poet, author'), which came from Ancient Greek ποιητής (poiētḗs, 'creator, maker, author'), from ποιέω (poiéō, 'to make, compose'). It replaced the native Old English word sċop and is a doublet of piyyut.
