positioned
- 1Simple past and past participle of position.
The crew positioned the heavy generator near the loading dock.
Surveyors positioned markers along the new boundary line.
Note
A regular -ed form of the verb "to put into place," so one spelling serves both they positioned the generator and the generator was positioned. In the passive it shades easily into the adjective of placement and suitability. Was positioned near the dock reports an action, while is well positioned to succeed describes a state. An adverb such as well or strategically usually signals the adjective.
- 2Set in a particular place, or figuratively, well placed and suited to achieve something.
The strategically positioned speakers filled every corner of the hall with sound.
A strong balance sheet left the firm perfectly positioned to acquire its rivals.
Note
Rarely does it stand alone. The adjective leans on an adverb, as in well positioned or specially positioned, or on to plus a verb, as in positioned to help or positioned to receive. It is normally not compared, yet David A. Deese and Sam Biasi stretch it in 2022, writing that the IMF "remains much more positioned to manage than to predict crises."
