posts
- 1Plural of post.
Workers drove the fence posts deep into the frozen ground.
He read several posts on the forum before adding his own reply.
Note
One spelling serves a whole workshop of nouns: the fenceposts and lightposts in the ground, the studs behind a wall, the poles of a battery, the narrow pins a dentist sets into root canals. All take the same regular -s. The identical word is also the verb form in "she posts", and a determiner settles which you have: the posts are things, while someone posts a notice.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of post.
The company posts its quarterly results online each spring.
She posts her letters at the corner box on her way to work.
Note
The -s form carries every job the verb does: a clerk posts a notice on the board, a bookkeeper posts an entry from the journal to the ledger, a player posts the blind. In the sense of keeping someone informed it often takes up, so an aide posts the minister up on the details. Only he, she, it or a singular noun takes this form; every other present-tense subject uses plain post.
