prayed
PRAYD/pɹeɪd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of pray.
He prayed quietly in the back of the chapel.
After the storm finally passed, the villagers prayed in thanks.
Note
Because pray is a regular verb, one spelling serves both she prayed and she has prayed. It carries every verbal use: prayed to God, prayed the king for mercy, prayed for a dry harvest as plain strong hope. Older texts also use it to mean implored, as in they prayed him to stay, a use now obsolete. The archaic polite pray ("pray, sit down") is an adverb and never takes -ed.
