preached
SayPREECHT/pɹit͡ʃt/
- 1Simple past and past participle of preach.
The visiting minister preached for nearly an hour on forgiveness.
He had preached in three different parishes before settling here.
Note
One spelling does double duty because preach is regular: she preached on Sunday, she has preached here for years. Which use of the verb is in play decides what the participle can do. Transitive senses allow a passive (the gospel was preached, thrift was preached to the young). The intransitive ones, giving a sermon or lecturing obtrusively, have no direct object to turn into a subject.
