presented
- 1Simple past and past participle of present.
The committee presented its findings to the board last week.
Several new ideas were presented during the planning meeting.
Note
One spelling does two jobs. It is the finite past (she presented the award) and the participle after have or be (has presented, was presented). The reflexive use keeps its pronoun in both forms: he presented himself at the court means he came forward formally. In older legal writing, a person could be presented for an offense, meaning charged and brought before a court.
- 2Of a group in mathematics, having a particular stated presentation, or having a presentation with specified properties.
A finitely presented group admits a finite set of generators and relations.
Every finitely presented group in the survey was checked by computer for a solvable word problem.
Note
A group theorist's adjective for how a group can be written down, and it almost never travels alone. An adverb in front names the property: finitely presented means finitely many generators and finitely many relations, and recursively presented is another. Keep it apart from finitely generated, the weaker condition. Every finitely presented group is finitely generated, but the reverse does not hold.
