progresses
- 1Third-person singular simple present of progress.
Her recovery progresses faster than the doctors expected.
The investigation progresses slowly as new evidence comes to light.
Note
The verb form is spelled exactly like the noun plural, and it usually stands without an object: a recovery progresses, an investigation progresses slowly. It takes an object only in the sense of expediting, where someone progresses a claim or a file through its stages. The -es ending follows the final s, as in presses and dresses.
- 2Plural of progress.
The queen's progresses through the countryside drew enormous crowds wherever she stopped.
Medieval monarchs undertook elaborate progresses to display their authority over distant regions.
Note
Most meanings of progress resist counting. You make progress, even much progress, but never many progresses. The plural belongs to the countable meanings, above all the official journey of a monarch or other high personage, a state journey or circuit. It can also name more than one of the Soviet, later Russian, Progress spacecraft. For advances in general, prefer advances or developments.
