- 2Someone who formally registers that a bill of exchange or promissory note has been dishonored.
The protester must deliver notice of dishonor to each endorser of the bill before the legal deadline passes.
The holder paid the protester's fee and added it to the sum claimed from the drawer of the unpaid note.
Note
Commercial law gives the verb protest a narrow, procedural meaning, and the person who does it is a clerk of the record, not a dissenter. The work is exacting: in Charles Evan Stewart's Transnational Contracts (1997), the protester draws up an affidavit reproducing the bill word for word, with its acceptance, endorsements and any aval, a guarantee by endorsement. Keep it distinct from someone objecting in public, because here nobody is objecting to anything.
