proved
PROOVD/ˈpɹuːvd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of prove.
The detective proved the suspect's guilt beyond any doubt.
His early theory has proved correct in every test since.
Note
One spelling does two jobs: the plain past (she proved it) and the participle after have (it has proved useful). Its rival participle, proven, tends to take over before a noun, as in a proven method, while proved holds its ground inside verb phrases. In the 'turn out to be' use, proved links straight to its complement, as in proved correct or proved a failure, and needs no 'to be'.
