quacked
- 1Simple past and past participle of quack.
The ducks quacked noisily as the keeper scattered grain across the water.
Somewhere in the reeds a lone bird quacked twice and then fell silent.
Note
One regular -ed form does double duty: the ducks quacked and the ducks have quacked share a spelling. It carries every meaning of the verb, not only the farmyard one. A queen bee can be said to have quacked during certain stages of its development, and a fraudulent healer quacked when practicing quackery. An older use, making loud and empty pretensions, is now obsolete, so that sense of quacked survives only in older writing.
