questions
- 1Plural of question.
The reporter's questions grew sharper as the interview went on.
Several questions remained unanswered after the meeting.
Note
A plain -s plural that carries the countable meanings of the singular: things asked, topics under investigation, doubts about a claim, proposals put to a meeting. The spelling is shared with the verb form, as in she questions the witness. Position tells them apart. After a determiner it is the noun (the questions, several questions). After a subject it is the verb.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of question.
The detective questions each witness separately.
My daughter questions everything she reads in the news.
Note
Its object decides the meaning. With a person as the object it means interrogating: the detective questions each witness. With a claim, motive or decision as the object it means doubting: she questions his motives. Without an object it simply means inquiring. The noun's spelling is the same, so watch for a subject before it, as with the plural noun.
The committee questions whether the figures are accurate.
Nobody questions her honesty.
- 3A game in which each player may speak only in questions, and saying anything that isn't a question means losing.
