queueing
- 1Present participle and gerund of queue.
Queueing the incoming requests keeps the server from being overwhelmed.
The system kept queueing new orders faster than the warehouse could fill them.
Note
Most verbs drop a final e before -ing, but this spelling keeps it, so queue gives queueing alongside the more regular queuing; both are in use. The grammar is the same either way: people waiting in line take no object (trucks were queueing for miles), while the computing meaning takes one (queueing the incoming requests).
- 2Alternative form of queuing.
Message queueing lets the two programs work at different speeds.
Fair queueing of network traffic stops one user from hogging the connection.
Note
As a noun the word covers the waiting itself, as in hours of queueing, and in computing the ordering of tasks, as in fair queueing of network traffic. Its run of five vowels, u-e-u-e-i, has no consonant to break it. It can also be counted, with the plural queueings.
